"RLL" GENERAL
LICENSED SYSTEM
Background Information
The RLL device is distributed
by Ronan as a General Licensed device. This data sheet details the advantages of the RLL
device versus other generally licensed devices. Note that these devices do not require any
site-specific license.
The RLL Series Systems
utilize only microcuries of a radioisotope. Because these devices use such a low activity
source the primary responsibilities of the user are reduced to those of protection against
theft and accountability for the materials.
Wipe testing, radiation
surveys and special radiation training typically required for most Licensed devices are
not required. When the device is no longer in use, it should be returned to Ronan or a
licensed waste broker for disposal.
"RLL" Device
Advantages .vs. General Licensed Devices
Commonly, General License is
viewed as the simplest form of Licensing. However, even with these devices wipe tests,
shutter checks, surveys etc., are required to be performed at certain intervals.
The RLL Devices using the low
energy source quantities are not subject to the following requirements:
- Low Energy
Source-(900 µCi of Cesium-137)
- No wipe testing
- No radiation
surveys required
- No on/off shutters
on source holders are required due to low radiation fields
- Able to install,
relocate, and move the devices without a licensed person present
- Safest gamma gauge
on the market
Summary
The regulations pertaining to
the RLL series of devices are not as restrictive as most devices distributed as General
License. However, they must be used in accordance with instructions from Ronan, protected
from theft or loss and disposed of properly. Theft or loss must be reported to the NRC or
agreement states. |
